Celebrate Your Crown This HAIR-itage Month!
It is Heritage Month! A time to appreciate and celebrate the melting pot that is South Africa’s rich cultural and diverse heritage. We all have fond hair memories; from sitting on the floor between a relative’s legs as she braids your hair, to being burnt while relaxing your hair (those were the absolute worst). Not forgetting the busy, and exciting December period where every salon would be full because we’re all trying to look our best for the festive season (Go away, COVID)! Either way, hair isn’t just hair; it never has been. Hair is an extension of our personality and a form of creative expression.

For centuries, hair has played a significant role in the culture of Africans. Back in the days it symbolised one’s family background, social status, fertility, spirituality, tribe and marital status amongst other things.

At Avroy Shlain, we’ve always been committed to encouraging women to express their originality and true beauty. We have always celebrated the natural and diverse beauty of this continent, its cultures, and its people. This Hair-itage Month, we want to remind you that no matter your background or beliefs, your style, or the way you choose to wear your hair, to us, you are African, and so, you are beautiful.

These are some of the hairstyle trends to try this spring:

  • Faux Locs
  • The big chop, with a hint of colour
  • A short bob wig/weave
  • Tribal braids/cornrows with accessories

Protective styling

You can never go wrong with a protective style like twists, faux locs or braids. Remember, when choosing a style, the thicker the better. Styles that are too thin and too tight strain the hairline, weakening the hair follicles and resulting in breakage. Don’t allow your stylist to pull too tightly when installing braids, this should be non-negotiable.

Tip: Before installing your protective style, do a deep conditioning or hot oil treatment to ensure that the hair and scalp are in the best possible condition so that it can handle the styling process.

Try: Give your hair the love it deserves with the Afri Moisture Hair Butter (read more) and the Afri Moisture Hairline Treatment Oil. These products are suitable for all hair types and packed with natural oils. They will work well with any protective style you rock this spring.

Play with colour

It’s no secret that spring is a season of colour. If you’re worried about which colours best suits your skin tone, we suggest you go for bold shades. Colours that are currently dominating are classics; rose gold, blue, lilac, platinum and blonde looks gorgeous on both dark and light-skinned women.

Tip: To prepare the hair for the colouring process, we recommend a protein treatment to strengthen the hair because dye tends to dry it out. The Afri Moisture Hair Mayo is excellent to restore strength when hair breakage occurs because of colouring. Once your hair is colored, we advise the Afri Moisture Leave-In Conditioner for everyday use.
